So the Commumity Shield ended in an unusually good game, now we can finally turn all our attention to the main event with the return of the Premier League this Saturday 14th August 2010. Well we could if it wasn’t for a blooming annoying England friendly tonight at Wembly against Hungary. Who organised that farce?

The community Shield 2010 » Preview

Just when you thought you’d had a belly full, On Sunday 8th August 2010 it all kicks off again. Yes football is back and despite the awful gut renching feeling we all felt on the 27th of June, I can’t wait for more of the same.
So with great relish I’ll be watching at 3pm as Manchester United take on Chelsea in this years Community Shield.

If the streets of London are paved with gold then the streets of Liverpool must be strewn with missing jigsaw pieces. Never before has one team been looking that final piece for so long.
Since they last won the league back in 1990 Nigel Clough, Stan Collymore, Nick Barmby, Harry Kewell, Djibril Cisse, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Keane have all come along trying to be that ellusive piece and all failed to finish the puzzle.

Heskey Retires???

Emile Heskey announced his retrement from international football yesterday, the obvious question being when did he start playing international football!? Boom Boom!
Yes its an easy joke but surely one that merrits serious pondering?
7 goals from 62 caps for a striker in an abysmal record whatever way you look at it. Yes people might say he brought more to the team than just goals, but what exactly? He was supposed to bring out the best in Wayne Rooney, while that may have been true in a handful of qualifyers it certainly wasn’t evident in South Africa.

Spain lift the World Cup

So Spain won the 2010 World Cup finals in Johannesburg last night and I feel the need to eat a slice of humble pie.
In my last post I predicted Holland would win and indeed should win due to their sexier style of football throughout this tournament.
Oh Dear! The way Holland set themselves up was far from sexy, brutally ugly would be a better description.

Who will lift the World Cup

The World Cup Finals 2010 comes to an end this Sunday July 11th in Johannesburg. After 4 long weeks (they seemed much longer after Englands exit) we have our 2 finalists.
Good luck to both Holland and Spain. It will be nice to see a new name claiming the golden prize.
Despite drawing Spain in the office sweepstake I’ll be backing Holland as in my opinion they’ve played the sexiest football throughout this rather unsexy tournament, especially when compared to Spain’s quite surpirsing sterile approach. There hasn’t been so many one-nils since George Graham’s days at the Library.

Why the best 5 players in the world didn’t come to the party

Ask anyone (even my mum) to name the 5 best footballers in the world before June 11 and you’ll have got the same 5 names in slighlty different orders depending on your allegiance. Time and Time again Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka, Rooney and Torres would be the cry. Now whizz forward in time and what a difference a month makes.
Who would choose that list now? Messi more than the others showed glimses of brilliance. A liitle touch here, a flick there but was that it? Surely not a good enough display from the best player since Maradona!
